POEM STARTER

Write a poem about a bird who was once human.
Even now, it remembers what it was like to have hands, to touch, to hold, and to feel. Now wings beat where arms once moved, but the memories never fade.
Café Sparrow
On the wires a lone sparrow sits
sun warming his fluffy coat,
wind ruffling his feathers gently
stroking him like a soft hand.
He died ten years ago -
well, he was meant to die.
But he turned into a sparrow
escaping death in the sky.
From the wires, he watches life pass
friends moving on with their day.
loneliness gnaws at his tiny heart
He is close, but worlds away.
The sparrow glides down sometimes
where the people sit in the cafés.
He listens to the chatter and laughs
His tiny heart longing to belong.
Sometimes he chirps and bows
begging for crumbs and pets.
Some children grab
some adults shoo
sometimes a finger is extended
petting the sparrow’s head,
stroking under his feathers,
touching the warmth of his skin
and for a moment
he is human again.
