Sadly Disabled and Tragically Aware

(satirical piece)

I was quiet, but I was not blind

When you all stared at me funny

Sticking your tongues out

Showing your buck teeth out

Hitting your heads with your hands

Grunting and groaning

Moving around all silly and whatnot

Wanting to say things to me up to my face

“Look at him! Look at this kid!

“Yeah, the retarded kid in Special Ed!”

“Yeah, in both Speech and Special Ed, how retarded!”

I’m sorry. Are you so retarded that you pooped yourself?”

“Yeah, Baby, did you have a poopy in your diaper?”

“What a retard! Having an IEP! Hunching over like that!”

“Yeah, just standing there! Looking at us confused!”

“Such a laughable retard! He should be ashamed of himself!”

You said as people were walking down the halls

Staring at you uncomfortably

Confused at what you were doing

“Hey. It’s okay, I know. He’s a retard, but he is a human”

Just a retarded one”

You said as you were pretending to hump something

Humping the air

Still looking ridiculous

All of them later stopped

Kept walking down the hallways

Chuckling to themselves, thinking they’ve won in some way

Even though everyone else in the hallways was looking at them funny

They knew that I was just harassed

They felt bad for me

Which is why they all immediately left

Immediately looking at their phones and talking about other stuff

Which left me there

Standing in the hallways alone

Then a few tears came down from my eyes

I was quiet, but I was not blind
