POEM STARTER

Write a poem that starts in a cheerful, bright mood, but then reveals underlying anger or bitterness.

Solar Flare Days

Caught in a solar flare spinning around the sun

It tinges everything in a red haze

The sky is bluer, water shinier, watermelon sweeter

In the heat of a solar flare day

Solar flare days snuck up on me

While I reveled in the last vestiges

Of a spring long sprung

Humid, horrid tentacles sneaking

A perfect strike

Oh, solar flare days

Warm and bright and scorching

Searing into the skin, burning all it touches

The grass is brown, the leaves shrivelled

Solar flare days string together with no end

Here I sit

Above water so impossibly blue

Chlorinated vapor steaming me

Roasted in this wooden chair

Watching for endangered swimmers

In what once was a cool pool, turned human soup

On a solar flare day
