Bitter Betrayal

“They say you’re working with the king.” Vallon just looked down, refusing to meet my eyes as he held the blade to my throat. Bitterness burried itself into my heart, as sharp as a dagger piercing through. My lip trembled as I pressed my back against the wall to keep the blade from cutting into my skin, resorting to me bleeding to death.

I swallowed. “You’d have to be an absolute fool to believe that!”

He wasn’t a fool. He was right. I betrayed a loyal friend and now I was lying?

“We have evidence, Elira. There’s no point in hiding it.” He didn’t even seem angry. Just…disappointed. It hurt.

“I’m sorry! Please, forgive me!” I begged, a tear dripping down my face. “I had to! But I hsven’t told them about you yet, we can-“

“Yet?!” He spat, anger suddenly flashing onto his face, the grip on his blade tighter. “You told them everything and saved the biggest secret for last! There is no ‘we’. There used to be, when I thought I could trust you. You are no friend.”

I braced myself for the warmth of my blood flowing down my neck but nothing came. He just walked away, dropping the knife, his eye shimmering with a singular tear.

“I’m going to kill the King.” He said, breath shaky, back still facing me. “I have had many asking me, offering to pay me double. You told me not to so I never took that opportunity to get us out of this godsforsaken place! And then I’ll kill the rest, every last one.”

“You can’t!” I rushed toward him, grabbing his shoulder to turn him round.

“And why should I listed to you! If they kill me, I’ll welcome it.” He took my hand off his shoulder. “I have nothing to loose.”
