POEM STARTER
Submitted by Olivia Pemberly
Write an etiological myth in the form of a poem.
An etiological myth, or an origin myth, explains how something came to be the way that it is today.
No Fly Zone
Creating the world was the easy part
just another spinning rock
A comet’s tail made a green start
And this is when troubles spark.
Thick roots dove down, branches up
Oceans carved canyons fathoms deep
from algae to redwoods then a hiccup
primates stood up to topple the sky
Amused we watched empires burn
Cannon smoke made brilliant sunrises
Hoping with guidance you’d learn
Knew you would die trying
Bewildered we watched wars unending
Forests of steel, asphalt rivers
Ever increasing without comprehending
Cautioned, we recalled our archeologists
Our technology tokens were mistaken
Lifesavers misused as weapons
Our rescue mission forsaken
Third planet earmarked: unsafe
