STORY STARTER

The writer stared at the post-it on the wall. She knew it would change her life for the far, far worse…
The Note
It was one post-it note, just one but I knew it was more than that. It’s not mine but someone I know, or at least I knew, they disappeared a while back and came back paralyzed, mute, and deaf everyone thought it was a kidnapping or a horrible accident but I knew it was so much more than that, and I knew their handwriting anywhere, and with it was a warning. “Don’t look behind you”, it was something you heard metaphorically, a symbol saying not to look back on the past and keep moving forward but I knew that the post-it was saying it literally. Maybe I knew from the gut feeling, or the way the writing was messy as if written in fear or horror, maybe it was how I could feel the stench of breathing right against my neck too strong to be imagined. I look beside me and to the door I wondered if I could bolt out that way without looking back, I wondered if the creature behind me would follow, would I end up dead or wish I was? What happened last time? Was it painful or instant? As I felt a hand on my shoulder I looked behind me on instinct, I couldn’t control it no matter how much I wished I could it was as if I wasn’t in control of my own body. I knew I was about to find out, and no option was going to be a good one.
