Pick Me

My girlfriend looked up at me with red-rimmed eyes. She looked so sad and said simply, “I don’t want to stick out like a weed in a field of wildflowers.”

I pulled her into a hug against my chest and rested my chin on the top of her head. I took a deep breath and let it go before responding. The first thing that popped into my head is something my sister used to say. _Weeds are just wildflowers that grew in the wrong place_. But that felt wrong since she is definitely not a “weed.” What does someone say to another someone when they feel this sad?

I decided to stay quiet a little longer and just hug her. We can talk this out when she’s ready. But I came up with a plan to buy the weirdest flowers for her every week until she saw the beauty in uniqueness. Because my girl is the most unique, special, wonderful, beautiful person in the entire world. And it’s my job to help her see that for herself.
