POEM STARTER

Write a poem that centres around the motif of butterflies.

Different species of butterflies can be symbolic of different concepts, and their behaviours and lifecycles can reflect or inspire human emotions.

Metamorphosis

My tummy wriggles nervously,

As I climb up in the sky.

Heart beats like wings fervently,

As I prepare to make the dive.

Throughout this whole ascent,

The plane is my cocoon.

A metal makeshift tent,

From which I’ll emerge soon.

I flutter to the window,

Armed like a missile is.

Prepare myself within though,

To leave this chrysalis.

I take a breath and jump,

Colours blur around.

Adrenaline is pumped,

As I near the ground.

I pull the cord and wings emerge,

Then stiffen in the breeze.

My heart slows from its recent surge,

My pulse begins to ease.

I gently land upon the grass,

Thankful I didn’t die.

Transform again? I think I’ll pass.

Now I’m the butterfly.
