POEM STARTER

Write a poem in a different genre to your usual comfort zone.

This poem can be in any style and with any theme, but try to write in a genre that you wouldn't normally try.

The Bark

The trees have eyes,

But no mouth.

The trees have arms,

But no articulations.

The trees have skin,

And they spill blood.

But they have no teeth.

The trees can receive,

But not reject.

The trees can hurt,

But not defend.

The trees mourn,

And they fear.

But they cannot avenge.

The trees must watch,

And must stay still.

The trees are witnesses wrapped in bark.

Foretellers,

cursed with the power of seeing only one’s demise, and that of their neighbors’.

This is why the willows are weeping, and the beechs contorting.

The trees have eyes.

The trees are scared.

They hunch and cower,

The foretellers know.

The end

Will soon

Be

At our doors.
