Just Give Up

Bella's head spun as she crashed through leaves and branches on her way down. Finally, she found herself on the forest floor, staring face up at the trees above her.

She sat up and drew her legs close to her chest. Sighing, she laid her head on her knees.

"That's it!" she suddenly declared, "I'm giving up!" She stood and began to pace. "Who needs stupid wings anyways? What's the point of flying when I'm probably still going to fall? I should just quit this and go do something else."

Bella began making her trek back to the village. She had decided. Instead of being a fairy, she would be an imp. That's what all the fairies who couldn't find their wings became, so that's what she would be. Imps lived great lives underground, eating roots and juicy tubers from the ground instead of the high-and-mighty nuts on which the fairies feasted. She would go home, pack her things, and move underground.

"Running away again?" a familiar voice said behind her.

She turned around to find her older sister, Beatrix. "What do _you_ want?" Bella said.

"I'm just wondering what you're up to." Beatrix sidled up to her side, her wings shimmering in the sunlight.

Bella sighed and continued walking. "If you must know, I'm becoming an Imp. I'll live out the rest of my life underground. I won't need wings then."

"You give up way too easily."

Bella stopped short, looking straight ahead. "N-no I don't! I don't."

"Yes you do. Everytime something gets difficult, or you're not immediately good at it, you give up. I don't know why. Maybe you're scared. Maybe you're embarassed. But you're never going to achieve anything if you don't actually commit and _try_."

With that, Beatrix flitted away on her glamourous wings, leaving Bella to question everything. She looked up again at the trees above her. Somewhere up there, she could find her wings. And she would. Even if she had to search every nook, every crevice, every branch, she would find her wings. This time, she wouldn't give up. If only to prove her sister wrong.
