WRITING OBSTACLE
It is the end of a very eventful school year and you have to give a speech at the prom.
Write a dramatic, exciting speech with interesting anecdotes. What can make this peice of writing stand out?
A Prom Speech
I walked up the steps onto the stage. I neeeded to say the best speech the world (or at least the prom) has ever heard.
I looked out, the spotlight was on me… literally. The kid with the greased up hair, and glasses that were perched up on his nose, was up on the cat walk over the stage. I looked out at the crowd as the spotlight slowly turned towards me.
In my head, I quickly recapped this school year. I didn’t have time to write and prepare a speech, considering the principle pulled me over just minutes before hand to tell me I needed to stand in front of the school and come up with a speech.
I brushed my hands against my dress, then held the microphone. I took in a deep breath, then started. “Hey Eastview High! Hope your enjoying the prom so far… even though you guys just walked in…” The room was silent, my attempt at a joke stayed just at that, an attempt. “Uh, snacks are to your left… pictures to your right.” I tapped my leg.
“Well, I think we all know this year has been quite… eventful. Congratulations Jackie, on your baby! Even though it may have interrupted homecoming, it was totally worth it! Serena is a beautiful name for a beautiful baby girl…”
I continued, “Uhm, even though the football team may have broke the record for most games lost in this county, y’all put in some effort… and hopefully had a fun time!”
“So glad that Amelia, our head cheerleader, healed from that injury!” I tapped the microphone. “You know, even though a whole pack of dogs somehow got let loose into the school durring the SATs, most of us still passed… so yay!” I waited a minute, and a few people clapped.
“Anyway, I know our school may be trashed from the previous tornado, but at least the local theater let us have our prom. So, everyone have fun… enjoy prom!”
I descended from the stage. I passed by my classmates, until I found a table to sit at. “That was the worst speech ever.” I said quietly as I buried my head in my hands.
I then looked up. Everybody moved their arms, and danced wildly. Nobody seemed to care.
“Hey Sandy, loved your speech.” A boy who I knew from science class said. His name was Pierce. “Wanna dance?” I smiled, maybe my speech wasn’t that bad.
