WRITING OBSTACLE

Choose a lyric from a song and let it inspire you to write a fantasy story.

It can be any lyric you like, but the story should still fit the fantasy genre so consider which lyrics might work best for this.

Cracked Hearts and Battle Scars

A short love story inspired by Fortnite and Taylor Swift’s “The Tortured Poets Department” era

In the neon-lit chaos of a late-night Fortnite lobby, two usernames always seemed to find each other: TraitorSwift13 and EmoteSniper.

She was swift with a sniper and even swifter with her comebacks, her avatar always rocking the skin that dropped the day Reputation returned to the Item Shop. He was quieter, methodical, building towers like poems, precise and careful. They met during a random duos match, him saving her from a surprise ambush in Mega City.

After that, they played every night. They talked between matches—music, books, heartbreak. She confessed she started gaming to escape a toxic ex who never understood her love for “girly things” like heartbreak anthems and building killstreaks. He shared his own breakup, how his ex used to mock his need to “win” even in love.

They were a team in-game and, over time, something more outside of it.

Until the day she stopped logging in.

No goodbye. No message. Just offline.

Two weeks passed. Then three.

Then one night, just before he logged off, a message:

“I wasn’t ready for how much this felt real. And I got scared. But I miss you. Meet me in Misty Meadows?”

She was there, dancing to an emote timed perfectly to a Taylor Swift line:

“You said I was a player / But I’m the one who got played.”

He dropped beside her, no weapons drawn.

“Still a traitor?” he typed.

“Maybe,” she replied. “But only if I lose you again.”

They didn’t win that game.

But they stayed in the storm, together, until the very end.
