POEM STARTER
‘Deep breaths take up far more space than silence.’
Write a poem based on, or including, this line.
The Deep Still
Deep breaths take up far more space than silence
And even then i can’t catch my breath
The silence becomes the only thing that comforts since
That day where my voice was too loud
and my body became stone
And I don’t know where to go and how to live without a sound
Too long ago was the day that you left, and the darkness felt safe after
Too long since I had realized that life is not just made of laughter
It’s made of thunderstorms that rock our boats with anger
Crying and lashing out as their screams go unheard
And when the rocking cannot be still we can only barely hold together
And through this silence comes comfort, that is where we learn
Deep breaths take up far more space than silence
And I know it’s hard to believe when it doesn’t make sense
To still that boat would to stop too quickly and fade into the water
To sink with weights on our ankles and time just becomes longer….
Help me breathe a breath that isn’t there, I cannot go for long
This end that will come again to fade back into being lost
To fade into this sea that is so lonely it chokes
And to fade back into silence, you’ve tried to convince me there is hope
But that too is fading back into the black of my head
Behind my eyes, I forever sleep, though I do not in my bed
