POEM STARTER
Submitted by Robin Marlowe
Write a poem about unseasonable weather. e.g. A warm day in the winter, or snow in the summer.
One Day Gone
These days that become the calling of birds
Into dawn’s opening eyes
Just mornings that were once full of music became silent
The sky crying into my arms, the sun that was felt fell
The leaves that were so close drifted away to where the rest were held
Just one more day, just one more night
Just one cold day amongst the heat
To shiver under the clouds that kept the sun company
For far too long
I should’ve known that the weather could not hold still
Locking away the sun into a room, to treasure there
For it to escape and bring back the flowers
That seem to have withered over night
If only it could run back into summer’s welcoming embrace
But forgotten, quickly leaving to escape
To hold down our sleeves, and pull together our doors
Desperate for the sun to come back, desperate for warmth
Desperate for something that will come again once the day has worn thin
To scoop up the stars from the place they had hid
To awake to the birdsong through the open window
Again to live another day, when the sun returned
When gone again, we’ll know we never learned
