WRITING OBSTACLE

Write the climax of a murder mystery story without any reference to the victim or the crime itself.

The climax can be defined as the point in the story with the highest tension and stakes. How will you drive the story without mentioning the crime?

The Confession

“I gathered you here together to reveal the crime and who did it,” the Detective said.

Mrs. Blurple raised a dainty gloved hand, the other one holding a tea cup steady on her lap. “Melvin,” she said.

“Huh?”

“He’s not here yet. Melvin. Says he’s running late.”

Edwin the Earl of Audubon sighed. “Can we go on without him?”

The Detective rolled his eyes. “EVERYONE has to be here,” he said, flapping his little notebook on his thigh. “I specifically said noon.”

Paula, the gorgeous starlet, adjusted her hair. “I have a shoot at 2,” she huffed.

The Butler checked his watch. “Oh, bloody hell,” he said. “I confess. I did it. Are we done now?”

Everyone looked at each other as silence took hold of the drawing room.

“Well, that’s it then,” the Detective said. “Lunch first, then arrest.”

“Jolly good, Sir.”
