POEM STARTER

Write an ode to an extinct animal, without ever saying the animal’s name - this rule also applies to the title.
Extinct
Oh, what happens when it dies
Does the entire balance of earth collide?
Does it disappear like it was never found?
Just a ghost of something, drowning deep in the ground
Once it might have lived past our day
If only it was destined to stay
But other plans were stored just beneath the eye
And so long this creature goes, so long a goodbye
An area of growth, flourished and free
Seemed to sink right beneath the sea
An island of red and plush signs
The only mark of existence on the outside
A fate sealed with a gun and a man
Peace for this animal wasn’t what was planned
