WRITING OBSTACLE

Submitted by lanie

Write a story, poem, or paragraph, personifying a creaky floorboard in an old house.

Remember this doesn't mean you have to write from its perspective, but give it human characteristics.

There’s Always Purpose

_The lights go out _ _I’m all alone Abandoned, unfixed, I feel like an old bone One person comes Then another Nobody bothers to replace me Nobody bothers to check on me Food crumbs fall on me Milk absorbs into the cracks Dirt doesn’t escape And the bugs eat through me for the food that is placed I creak and break I lost my color My nails get loose And yet nobody replaces me Suddenly, no one comes through the door No one walks on top of me No one is talking… Empty I wait And wait And I wait Still, the house feels empty and no one is around _ _Light comes into view but no one is around _ _Then darkness comes and only the crickets sound I thought about eternity I was going to be here forever with no one stepping on me I can’t remember how many days have past 5? No 10, perhaps? Can’t be I’ve lost my mind, I think The days seemed longer until someone steps on me…and before I know it, hundreds of feet walk upon me and talk about me And then…I feel myself slowly being pulled up And I realize I’m being taken away I’m finally being taken away I’m no longer going to be brown and gross Sure, I may not be around anymore But that’s not the point I’m getting out of here _

Weeks go by and now there is a new floor

Pure white and no longer brunette

The cracks are no longer visible

And the floorboards don’t creak

A young couple started there family

And the floor goes through the same thing

The previous floor went through

The brightness come on

I’m surrounded by light

Beautifully sacred

As lovely as a banquette

The old floor had a purpose

The new floor has a purpose

Everyone has a purpose…

What’s yours?
