WRITING OBSTACLE
Submitted by Frankie Famighetti
Create an origin story for a common saying, such as 'break the ice' or 'once in a blue moon'.
Your story should explain how this expression came to be, and why it means what it does.
Break the Ice
I, Sir Thomas North, am translating a piece
By Plutarch, a great historian and philosopher
But I am stuck
Stuck on one part, feeling like an amateur
“To be the first to” -what?
What could I write?
Should I write “introduce”?
Oh, but that doesn’t sound right
What could it be?
I don’t know
I really don’t
I feel so dim, so low
Over how I just cannot
Cannot just jolt something down
Instead just sitting down, lost, frustrated
Why can’t I just write a simple noun?
I need to think
Think of some word or maybe some phrase
Something that would make sense
That wouldn’t cause any haze
Something that would have many meanings
Like relieving tension
Getting things started, paving a path
To lessen any discomfort or apprehension
But what is that something?
What is it?
To fit those meanings
To fit this sentence, even just a bit
I need to figure this out
Soon enough
Otherwise, I think I’ll lose it
Act so guff
So beyond control
Over a frivolous thing without thinking twice
Gosh, I need to relax
Really need to break the ice
Wait, what did I just say?
“Break the ice”? Really?
Wait, that’s it!
That’s the one to be
To be in this writing
It fits so well!
So perfectly!
This piece will do just swell!
