The Influencer
"I hate that song", the voice chimed in Eleanor's head.
Her perfectly manicured fingers tapped her white desk, and tiny downward crease formed in her perfect full lips.
If she had had less botox, her forehead would show deep lines of concentration.
She was editing her video for social media. Baking 2-Ingredient gluten free sugar free brownies in a 2 million dollar kitchen. Her mouse hovered over the play button.
"Don't play that friggin song again or I will unalive you."
Eleanor shooed the thought away like an annoying fly and pressed play. Her video started, showing the pretty blonde Eleanor stirring brown goo in a white sweater. The whole thing was accompanied by a sickly sweet 50s pop song.
"Will you at least make it less loud. My ears are bleeding! I'm vomiting!"
Eleanor turned the volume of the background music down a bit. Then she hit post.
After a few seconds, the first comments and likes trickled in.
"First!"
"Love you🩷"
"Being this early feels illegal"
Watching the view counter increase with every page reload filled Eleanor's brain with dopamine.
But after the 10th reload the watch counter seemed to slow down. Existential dread grew in Eleanor's chest.
Time to produce more content.
"That will 80$ please." The teenager behind the counter handed Eleanor a gigantic baby blue and pink milkshake with a piece of cake, donuts, fireworks and cupcakes stacked on top.
She sat down. The cafe recently went viral and was packed full with people.
"I think I am going to puke again just looking at that", the voice in her head spat.
Eleanor tried to find the perfect angle for her opening shot. She started the camera. Careful but swiftly she moved the spoon to the pristine piped cream.
"OMG it's ElisWorld"
A scream in Eleanor's ear. Her hand slipped, ripping a big crack through the cream mountain.
"Damn little parasite vermin", the voice in her head growled.
Eleanor took a breath, put on her smile and turned to the little girl.
"I love your videos. Look, I am watching your newest right now"
The girls phone was on maximum volume, distorting the audio of Eleanor's brownie video. The song felt like a dagger through her brain. She felt like she was not in control of the situation anymore. Like on autopilot she raised her hand and slapped the girl's stupid pink phone. Then everything faded away into noise and chaos.
Eleanor woke up on her white fuzzy couch. She asked the voice in her head what had happened.
"You hit a child"
"Really?"
"Well, you hit a child's phone"
"Does this mean my career is over?"
"No... You went shopping with the kid and bought 10 new phones."
"Oh okay."
"The video is actually going quite well on your account. You should let me help more often"
