Will in Michigan

My goal is to keep my creative side healthy by turning prompts into ideas. I try to write what I can in under 15 minutes - I want to let ideas flow without too much editing or overthinking it.

Forecast

Will in Michigan

1 min read

Wintry mix, the forecast says

Looking forward twenty days

The sleet runs down the window pane

And here sit I, alone again

My room is cold and so am I

Starting at the steel-grey sky

Where did the warmth of laughter go?

Where are the friends I used to know?

Is it my personality

Or something they don’t see in me?

Glacial as the rain that falls

My frozen heart for comfort calls....

Unexpected

Will in Michigan

“Pub,” he muttered.

“What?” Came a voice like a goshawk, causing his eardrum to vibrate in a most unpleasant fashion.

“PUB!” He hollered.

“Yeh’ve been gone fehr six hours, yeh lazy slug. And yeh tell me yeh’ve been at the pub this whole time?”

“Yar, I’ve been at the pub. I wanted a bleedin’ pint, didn’t I?” He felt his last nerve fraying.

“Wiv who?” Came the next screech from the kitchen. He ...

Highway 78

Will in Michigan

1 min read

Though I can never go back again

I can never forget the feeling

Sitting in the back seat

Vinyl bench seat with three belts

Not wearing any of them

And over his shoulder I could see

His hands on the steering wheel

Wipers at full speed

The crack that ran across the windshield

The crack in his voice

As he told me that we wouldn’t see her again

And what was the song

What was the song on the AM/FM ra...

Look, Man

Will in Michigan

1 min read

So here’s the thing, right? I never wanted to be alive in the first place. I’ve been grossly depressed for a good part of my life, and the medication really only helps take the edge off. Most of my family has died on me unexpectedly. I ain’t been able to hold down a steady job in forever. I can’t even sleep properly at night.

I never even celebrate my birthday. Why? Because I didn’t ask to be bo...

Lost

Will in Michigan

1 min read

There was a stretch of golden beach; her body was warm, fuzzy as a peach.

Beside the Great Lake, the summer ran slow - and if you’ve ever been there, you’ll know

those hours that seem as though they must be imbued with some kind of fairy dust.

The late afternoon wends into eve - and some of those days, one could almost believe

that the sun just stopped in the sky; hung just above the horizon for d...

Stars Reflected In Her Eyes

Will in Michigan

2 min read

At the first glimpse of her, his blood ran cold. As he drew in the net, there among the hundreds of mackerel, her pale white skin shone unmistakably under the full moon. He figured that he’d managed to snag a body, some sodden corpse dumped in the sound, an unfortunate murder victim that had been disposed of only to come up here.

He almost vomited at the thought of it.

As the boat winch drew t...

The Revelation

Will in Michigan

1 min read

As we wander our wandering way ‘cross this Earth,

Seeking truth, and some kind of clarity,

It may behoove us to think of the worth,

Of the simplest words: love and charity.

Amass, oh, amass what riches you might.

For money, think of yourself firstly.

You’ll go to your grave never knowing the light

That travels with kindness and mercy.

Seek power in every relation you have.

Seek dominance, and wi...

The Cruise

Will in Michigan

1 min read

“Should there be pigeons here?” Megan Duncan said, her grey eyes searching the sidewalk before her with concern. “Pigeons are urban birds, are they not? And they prefer a warmer climate.”

An old man walking next to her asked, “Why shouldn’t they be?”

She started at the sound of his voice so close, and turned to look at him, frowning. He wore a soft cap the color of nutmeg and round glasses. His ...
