The Plant Person

Bugsy Watts

1 min read

Write a story or poem about a person born from the ground. Do they have superpowers? Are they connected to nature? How are they viewed by ordinary people? Are they the only one and, if so, will they ever be accepted by society?...

Conviction

Bugsy Watts

1 min read

**L**ittle were my torments when ignorance reigned

**O**ver my cloudy conscience on hot days.

**S**itting in new knowledge I lost my conviction

**T**o speak on pertinent, painful things.

**A**nd I lost me, too.

**N**ow that I know there is always more to know

**D**oubt hugs me tightly because he can.

**F**lashing a warning when I stray sideways

**O**paque certainty hooking in to all I am.

In Another Life
Top 10

Bugsy Watts

I know your mind

like the back of my hand

and can see it holding yours

like we did at age ten

laughing maniacally on the playground

as we flew through the air

and the swing approached

the point of no return.

We would scream with delight

to answer the roaring ocean

never caring to wonder

or addressing the notion

that one day our lives would

send us far away,

two ships diverging

to return an...

Frozen Walk

A placid lake

was the perfect place

to whisper without words.

Frozen over in December

it ceased to move on the surface

still, it flowed beneath icy bounds.

The fish lingered in the water

muffled as they were

by the barrier above.

And we ventured along the edge

sliding silently as we did

along the lake that would relent

with brighter sun.

We knew the fish were there

they had nowhere else to g...

Senses Lost

Bugsy Watts

1 min read

Write a story or poem about losing one of your senses. You can choose one of the classic five or think more broadly, like proprioception, pain perception, or hunger. Your character does not have to be the only character impacted (e.g. the characters cannot see because the world is overcome by darkness). ...

Memory Breathes

Bugsy Watts

1 min read

Memory breathes

claiming a life of its own

it breathes

to remind me how little I control

pulling the past forward

in the most pertinent way,

to recollect all I did

and didn’t say.

Olfaction the oxygen

memory inhales

to walk down the lane

of relevant tales,

where I stayed in reality

in pleasure and in pain,

now breathing little reminders

of progress in my brain.

Memory breathes

to pepper ...

Fairy Forest

Bugsy Watts

1 min read

I looked out at the woods

where the fairy river flowed,

just a step, hop, and jump

from the edge of my window,

And knew the beasts and critters

lurked and creeped there

in the cover of shadows.

I could see them flittering

over and around the canopy,

between the interlacing oaks

and the sycamore leaves,

carrying secret messages for

those who walked slowly

and listened with integrity.

Some fear ...

We’ve been there,

in the velvet where the other

planets lay peacefully

nestled in permanent storms,

encircled in forever crowns.

We’ve been there,

on the dusty little rock

that pulls the vast oceans

as it whistles by

super, harvest fixture

in the black night sky.

We’ve been there,

away from our home

or perhaps drifting

through places we belong

ever expanding, ever careening

in the milky g...

Ancient Creature

Bugsy Watts

Innocuous though it seems,

to unknowledgeable minds

dwelling in different realms,

on separate heights,

in theory, only;

I knew the power of this being.

Curious, I could not see how it saw

with hidden eyes.

Yet it moved like it belonged,

for it belonged far longer than I.

I observed it’s undulations that

mimicked the movements of the deep sea,

drifting in and out of purpose,

yet existing here, ...

Little Lightning Bug
Top 10

Bugsy Watts

1 min read

My spark, my light

said the little lightning bug,

waking at twilight

to enter the dark.

My spark, my light

yawned the little lightning bug,

against this blackness

her form was stark.

My spark, my light

sang the little lightning bug,

as she whizzed through

the silver forests of Wren.

My spark, my light

chanted the little lightning bug,

knowing, to convince herself

it must be said.

My spark,...
