Thomas Black

So I’ve taken some time away from writing. I wasn’t happy with my work and needed time to decide on a direction. I think I know what kind of work I want to do now. As always feedback is welcome and appreciated.

Facade

I realised too late what you were.

A kind smile hiding a row of thorns.

The sincerity in your eyes masking your malice.

You wrapped my soul around your hand.

And dug your claws in deep.

Now my heart is frozen.

Betrayed, shattered, lifeless.

‘Ok children say goodnight to grandpa.’ The two little bundles of energy collided with the old man. Driving the breath from his body and a laugh from his lips. He squeezed the children back, kissed them both on the top of the head and wished them a good night. ‘Will you tell us a story granpy?’ The littlest of the two Emily asked.

Now their parents were at her door, frothing and snarling and banging like wild beasts. Kate...

The Empty Kingdom

The Prince of Clay glanced over the edge into the pit below. He could hear them down there, shuffling and squashing against each other. Roaring and grunting between laboured breaths and mouthfuls of meat. He thanked the Forevers that the light in the throne room made it too dim to see down into the pit. The sounds and the smell were enough to conjure a multitude of horrors that would haunt his dre...

The Place Beyond the Black

Past the constant pain and the daily grind.

Past the pills and the doctors that muddle my mind.

Past the misery and the despair.

Past worrying if I’ll always be there.

To a place where my niece is finishing school.

Embarrassed by her uncle who still thinks he’s cool.

To seeing my other babies grow up.

To finishing school and raising a cup.

If I had a prayer it would be for this place.

For a life...

Reflection of Embers

Thomas Black

As a child I heard the voice, soothing, screaming. It compelled me to let it out. To watch its light, to feel it’s warmth, to behold it’s fury. It’s dance was intoxicating, beautiful in its desolation. So many times I longed to be its partner.

As I grew so did my urges. They became harder to control. The voice made ugly demands of me. Wanted me to use the light to do terrible things. But I would ...
