The Bleak Beginning

_Genre: Dystopian _

There were cues upon cues of people lined up. Men, women and children separated. They all moved forward towards the front but what was past the frosted glass barrier they didn't know. Except, that they didn't have a choice.

There were no homely smells or noises to where they were headed, all there was amongst the masses as they walked in lines was a tension of uncertainty. Forward and forward. Destination unknown.

A long white bus came into view. They walked further and got closer and closer until they were next in line for the barrier. On the side the long bus stood still and all that was heard was the hum of the engine running. They stopped as the reached the threshold. The women in the middle lines, the children to the right and the men to the left. Suddenly, from behind the glass walls women wearing light blue pillbox hats on top of their tied up buns, came to take the children and escort them onto the bus.

Though the uniformed women looked neat, acted polite enough considering the circumstances and wore smiles they’re actions only exacerbated the the eeriness of it all. Then all at once the silence was broken with shouts from parents upon being separated from their children once again. Then hundred red dots of lasers fell upon them once again, stifling and shutting their protests for good. No one could see the people or technology pointing at them, they knew only that the threat was real.

As each child went they paused before stepping into the bus, looking behind them and searching the paused lines for the familiar faces of their childhood. Until a gentle hand was placed on their shoulder and they could no longer prolong their entry into the vehicle. Once the seats were filled a uniformed women gave the all clear to the driver and he lurched the bus forward to leave. The kids looked through the tinted glass, holding on for as long as they could, even as the view of the masses grew smaller and smaller. When they finally left the station, their loss began to settle in and the uncertainty of their new destination and future dawned upon them. There was no one coming to save them and there was nothing they could do to change it and all they could do was cry.
