STORY STARTER

"Let’s skip the pleasantries, shall we? You and I both know we’re not here for small talk.”

Write a story that includes this line of speech.

Go Fish

"I don't see what's so interesting?"

The voice startled me, I didn't expect him to creep up on me like that.

Well, he's always creeping, never to be seen, always around. I just didn't expect him to speak up out of nowhere.

Quickly masking my surprise I retorted, "in front of you, the person with the booklet."

"What? You mean the one who's walking around passing booklets and is being ignored?"

"Yes."

I heard him chuckle, deep and velvety. My least favorite texture.

"I stand by my words."

"Well it may not be interesting to the likes of you," I emphasized before continuing on, "it's the way they can ignore someone who is doing their best to gain attention. The way they are ignoring someone on purpose."

"And by doing so, they are ignoring the person's purpose."

"Exactly."

"Well then, are you going to get a booklet?"

Choosing not to answer him, I raised my phone and clicked the shutter, capturing a picture of the employee. Their frustration immortalized.

"There, this way at least I will never forget them."

My words seem to ignite another bout of laughter from him, a deep booming one this time. "It seems that you are as bad as every other human after all."

"Oh please, just skip the pleasantries," I dropped the pretenses between us, as did the temperature around us. "You and I both know we're not here for small talk, and yet you insist on doing this every time."

He laughed again, crueler, sick sense of power play to try and win over me. "Got any fives?"

"Go Fish."

With that, everything raveled back to normal, as if there had never been an exchange between us. As if he never existed, and won't ever again.
