POEM STARTER

Awakening

Write a poem about an awakening - it could be literal or metaphorical.

Awakening of the Apocalypse

They were all children,

with their own lives to lead.

Yet you only see them

perched on their steeds.

The apocalypse is coming,

out of nowhere, we didn't know.

Yet for they who have awakened,

it had come long ago.

The first was a beauty,

loved and adored by all.

But when her fever rose,

they silently watched her fall.

"Why am I unloved,

for the sin of being sick?"

A hand reached out, an offer, a vow

"Come darling, I'll make it quick."

She now rides a white horse,

wearing a bow and a crown.

A sickly beauty with a sickly smile

spreading Pestilence through town.

The second was a weakling,

with a face that got him beat.

They threw him onto walls, tables, and finally,

from the balcony onto the street.

As he watched his own blood flow,

paint the road with a darkened red.

A love bloomed in his heart

filled with fascination and dread.

He pets his bloody horse,

watching armies slay at command,

he steals away the peace of this world,

as he causes War on demand.

The third one was unfortunate,

born and died without a name.

A poor soul who walked the streets,

dirtied and treated with shame.

They clawed the dirt for a morsel,

a tidbit, a crumb, a piece.

And yet as they shriveled up with hunger,

even in death they received no peace.

The black horse it rides will gallop,

and now they are the one above ground.

They carry scales and ration the food,

Famine is a hardship unfound.

The final one, and their leader,

was a boy no older than five.

A child with boundless curiosity,

and a laugh that sounded alive.

He had always seen a man,

dressed in dark and standing afar.

Even as his dearly parents,

hit him in hopes that he scars.

He still had the man with him,

the one who brought end to his pain.

Hades follows him and his pale horse,

he is Death who will begin to reign.

These children who have awakened,

ended by unfair hardships.

Now the world will share their fates

behold, the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse!

Thought this was really well done! You did a great job with your tone and pacing, every line ended on a beat!
