STORY STARTER

You can’t tell if your upstairs neighbour is genuinely a nice person or if they're really the devil incarnate...

The Inconvenience of Two Beds

It was very late at night and there was only one inn that had an open room. It was a very tiny inn with a very tiny room. The room was so tiny that the two tiny beds were stacked on top of each other against one wall. Neither Huo Linghun nor Xiao Xin liked the looks of it but it was better than being out in the cold and stormy night.

Huo Linghun was the better climber so he climbed to the top bed and Xiao Xin crawled into the lower bed. "Are you comfortable, Xiao Xin?" Huo Linghun asked once they were both settled into bed.

The bed sure was tiny but soft, and Xiao Xin was too tired to care much. "Yeah," he replied.

There was a bit of rustling from above him, and then Huo Linghun asked, "Are you warm?"

"Yeah," Xiao Xin replied again.

Only moments later Huo Linghun's voice came again, "Are you hungry or anything?"

"No," Xiao Xin said. Then he added, "Good night."

"Good night."

Although his questions had finally stopped Huo Linghun continued to move around in the bed above him. It rustled and creaked nonstop. Xiao Xin tried pulling the blanket over his head or covering his ears but nothing he did kept the noise out. He thought he would never get to sleep that night.

Those noises finally stopped to be replaced by a different kind of sound, a different movement, and then Huo Linghun was crawling into Xiao Xin's tiny bed with him. It was a close squeeze, Xiao Xin's back pressed into his chest, Huo Linghun's arm hugging him to himself- there was no room to spare but neither of them minded.

"I'm sorry, my Xiao Xin," Huo Linghun whispered. "I just couldn't sleep without you next to me."

"This is much better," Xiao Xin agreed just as quietly, and they both instantly drifted off to sleep together.
