WRITING OBSTACLE

Submitted by Frankie Famighetti

Create an origin story for a common saying, such as 'break the ice' or 'once in a blue moon'.

Your story should explain how this expression came to be, and why it means what it does.

Bite the Bullet

Back when medicine was more guesswork than science and anesthesia was a luxury, soldiers on the battlefield had only grit and luck to survive surgery. In the mid-1800s, when a soldier took a bullet to the leg or arm. Or worse. There were no operating tables or clean tools. Just blood, torn uniforms, and whatever courage you could summon.

One field doctor, a grizzled man named Horace Bell, had a habit of pressing a leather strap into a soldier’s mouth to keep them from biting their own tongue off while he operated. But during the Siege of Vicksburg, supplies ran thin. No straps. No morphine. Barely any clean cloth. Just bullets. Smooth, round lead ones.

So, when a young soldier named Thomas Grady lay screaming with a shattered femur, Dr. Bell pressed a bullet between his teeth and said, “Bite down, son. It’ll be over soon.”

Grady bit so hard the bullet left grooves.

Word spread fast among the ranks. From then on, when someone had to face something brutal, painful, unavoidable, and raw, they’d say, “Guess I’ll have to bite the bullet.” It meant: Get it over with. Take the pain. No backing down.

Years later, the phrase survived long past the wars. You could hear it in dentist offices, in breakups, even in boardrooms. It no longer meant life or death, but it still meant swallowing fear and doing the hard thing anyway.

Funny, really. A piece of metal meant to kill became the symbol of courage.

All because one doctor ran out of options… and one scared kid didn’t.

And yeah, Grady survived. Limped for the rest of his life, but he never stopped grinning. Said the worst pain he ever felt turned him into the bravest man he knew.

The end.
