A Story of Perspective
Writing Prompt: June 3 - "All this time I thought he was the villain, but as I watched the blood drip from my fingertips, I realized it was all a matter of perspective..."
They had pursued him to the end, nearly.
It was chance that I had seen
The crowd had gathered, pitchforks in hand
Where peace had recently been
We'd all heard tales of demonic fright
And I, too, thought the worst
Yet watching him flee, it came to mind
The tales might have been forced.
Weak and wobbly, slower he ran,
not but five steps ahead of danger
I started running towards him too,
drawn in, to help this stranger.
When cornered, at last, he turned to face
those who were bent to vanquish
The panic on his worn-out features,
had calmed and turned to anguish
Closer and yet Closer still
I came to his defense
A pin could drop, you'd hear it well,
The crowd became more tense.
"Why would this human intervene?"
"What good could IT bring here?"
"You know his kind, you know it well,
His kind is one to fear."
"Wait, no, this one might be
not exactly what you're thinking"
But as I spoke my last mortal words,
Into my neck teeth were sinking.
It happened fast, It stung and burn
the transformation complete
And when I had regained my balance
All I could think was "Eat".
A feast, indeed, served up right here
I drank, and drank, and drank
And when I was at last fulfilled
His figure appeared at my flank
"You saved me, Thanks" his dulcet tones
washed over my subconscious
It felt wrong, but not recalling why,
I listened to his promise.
He promised life, beyond all reason
He promised wealth and power
He promised unimaginable strength
bit by bit, my guard was lowered.
Now, I understand - I see, I hear,
All this time, viewed him as Evil
But as I watched blood puddle round
My memories grew feeble
Knowing what it's like inside
Knowing the drive and the objective
I realized, now, that him as "Villain"
was just a matter of perspective.
