WRITING OBSTACLE

Describe your dream candy shop.

This doesn’t have to be written from the perspective of a child, but it may be fun to use the language of wonderment and glee typical of astonished children.

Corner Store

“What’s that?” Sara pointed at the mint green corner store down the street.

“Oh, you’ve never been? It’s the best candy store in town,” Matthew answered. He stopped walking and shoved his hands in his jeans’ pockets. He held out his hands, showing small piles of shiny quarters in each. “Come on,” he said, and started skipping down the street. “Treats on me!”

Sara followed close behind her friend. Once they arrived at the front, she stared at the window displays. Her mouth watered instantly at the sight.

Giant plastic gummy bears stood guard at the front of the displays with wrapped rainbow lollipops at their sides. Streamers with the appearance of licorice ropes lined the top of the windows.

As soon as Matthew opened the door, the delicious smell of chocolate escaped into the city-polluted air. They both inhaled deeply, as if doing so would make an Ooey-Gooey Bar appear in their mouths.

Matthew grabbed her hand and led her inside, and what greeted them was a smorgasbord of candy on every shelf. Chocolate bars, hard candy, taffy—if she could name it, they had it.

Colorful plastic bins in the middle of the store held varieties of bulk candy: gummy bears in flavors Sara could never dream of, an entire rainbow of sour belts, chocolate-covered things she couldn’t name, and _so _much more. Even ice-cold cream sodas lined the coolers by the door.

To top it all off, the store was just as colorful as its candy. Some of the windows were stained glass, allowing a kaleidoscope of colors to bathe the candy displays. Vintage candy company signs decorated the soft pink walls.

Matthew grabbed a plastic bag and started filling it with blue candies. “Isn’t it great?” He shook his bag and grinned.

“It’s—“ She couldn’t even find the words. Moving to this town suddenly didn’t seem so bad. Not with Matthew by her side, and this surprising corner store.

“I know. It’s amazing,” he said. Sara thought that was the perfect word to describe it.
