A girl walks a cross a frozen lake in hopes of finding something or someone...
Alone
Alone. I felt alone. I was alone.
I stepped onto the frozen ice. I let out a breath as steady as my rapid beating heart. I took another step forward and felt a tear freeze against my skin. I knew there was a great chance he would not make it back but everything inside of me told me he would. He had to. I needed him to.
I turned my head to the snap of a twig within the trees to either side of the lake. I shut my eyes and turned to take just one more step forward. I told that to myself each slow movement I took. He might have told me to never give up but I just felt like he had given up on me if it was true he wouldn’t be coming back home.
Another louder snap sounded in the trees and I felt the darkening sky leaning beside me, whispering taunts of death into my ear. I walked from the lake and into the calling trees. There was a strange sound coming from within that pulled me closer.
A whistle sounded In the forest and a strange, warm light brought me impossible closer. I stepped into a small clearing and felt the temputure of the land drop rapidly. In the last light of the sun my breath radiated before me.
My veins bursted from my skin alike each hair on my arms and neck. There was a fire in the centere of the clearing. A torch to be exact.
“What do you believe your up to child?” I voice called from the distance. It was a tall man that almost reminded me of Jase though this man was taller and his hair deeper black.
“Uh.. sir I.. I.. I’m—“ I began.
“Your lost. I should have assumed as much from a young girl like yourself. Here, take this fire and be on your way, no need to keep your family on their toes any longer.” The man said. His voice was haunting and his words ringed in my head. Family.
I wished I could tell him that the only family I had left was the man I was looking for. Jase was the last one I could call family, soon I felt I would I find that I was alone.
I kidded to the man and reached out for the touch. It came out of the snow blanketed across the ground. When I stepped back onto the ice a slow snow fall began.
A large smile spread across my lips. I walked across the ice with all the confidence In the world before I came across a strange looking log strewn atop the ice. I lost my breath when I rolled the log over. My mind crowded with one world and one world only. Alone. I was alone for good. It was me and me only
The thing I had mistaken for a log was actually Jase. I felt my breath escape my lungs and I couldn’t breath back in. I toppled onto his body and felt tears begin to pour from my eyes. The icy wonderland around me was nothing more than a nightmare.
The torch I had been holding was beside me on the ice. I did not care what was going to happen next I just knew that I wasn’t going to make the first move and I didn’t.
Below me the ice cracked and I fell below the surface. The frigid water engulfed me and I felt that everything was gone. It was all gone. If only I had lived a different life, a better life. I thought about how the world would just continue without me and that thought was insanely scary.
My last thought however was that there was no one I was dying with. I was alone. Alone.
