As your protagonist walks through the ruins of their home city, they begin to regret the decisions they made that led them here...
Left in Ruins
Why? I paused in the doorway of the store I had been in before it all happened. Why did I trust her? I should have just kept it the way it was. It wouldn’t have ended like this if she hated me like before. If only —
Then I cried. I haven’t cried in years, I thought I’d forgotten how to. But I found myself leaning against the wall with tears rolling down my face.
“Hello?” I barely heared the whisper through my thoughts.
“Are you okay?” it was a girls voice coming from behind a shelf, she poked her head out but I couldn’t see her face through the dust and tears. I wiped my eyes with my sleeve and walked forward.
And there she was.
I gasped, “Why are you here?” I relised I was speaking,
“I…I got lost.”
“Don’t give me that bull. You knew I would be here. If I lived.” I snapped
“Um…do I know you?” she looked scared, but I reconized that expression. I forgot how to trust her.
“Do you? Well I hope so! I could be asking you the same question! I thought I could trust you but I guess I couldn’t! You knew it would end like this the second you spoke to me, but you didn’t care. You didn’t care that almost everyone that I loved would perish! Everone I loved died. Exept for one person. You. So yeah, you know me. I’m the girl that loved you to the ends of the Earth, the girl that you said you loved even more. But it was always a lie. You never loved me. You couldn’t love me. You can’t love anyone because you—You are the most heartless and merciless person I have ever met.”
“Who are you?!” I saw her eyes start to flood with the tears I had cried only a few minutes ago, “I don’t know you! I don’t know anyone!” She collapsed and wept.
“Wait—you really don’t remember me?” My eyes widened with fear and regret
“I don’t remember anything! I just woke up an hour ago!” I kneeled down in front of her,
“I’m sorry for shouting at you…I didn’t mean to do this. I was just angry.” Not technically a lie. I meant everything I had said at the time, but she doesn’t remember anything. I think she would fix it if she could.
“My name’s Wallace, lets get you something to eat.”
I led her to the second floor of the store and into the house I had once lived in. Most of the place was destroyed now, but I found the birthday cake my grandpa and I were going to eat the day this all happened.
I gave her a slice of the cake and she took a bite. I sat down and she started to speak once more,
“Do—do you know my name?”
“Nat. Your name is Natalie.”
