STORY STARTER

“There was never a prophecy, it was all a lie.”

Write a story that utilises this line of speech to reveal something either devastating or hopeful.

The Rift

The snapped in half edge of the warehouse groans under me, just like my mind, I shouldn’t be alive. That physiological terror rips my brain to shreds.

“Darin! We need to jump!” Grace, one of the last members of our team yells to me.

I stare down into the ravine, we are the last group, searching for the last rift and funnily enough. It lies here. At the bottom of the ravine, dark inky blackness spilling from the crack in reality. Beyond that crack, lies the Realm of Demons, unknown to all. But Demons now ravage our world. Waiting to kill us. Grace already jumped it’s just me and Clark. My thoughts run out of my mind as a loud screech slices through the cold winter air.

“Clark, I know you have somewhat invulnerability, but are you sure you can survive this?”

He gives me a weak smirk and says with a remnant of his old self, “Of course Cap’n, I’m the brute of our team for a reason.” But his smirk slides off his face, as if he doesn’t believe it any more than I do.

“Go find Grace, I’ll deal with these monsters. Tell her to find the others.”

He nods and leaps in after Lena.

A loud bang comes right after Clark jumps.

Then another, then one more….and?

Silence.

Then chaos comes to kill me.

The monsters break down the door, their so eager that their hands are piling over each other, sharp teeth, almost drooling with anticipation, like it’s a more of a dog than a monster. But their piercing blue eyes. They glow madly and seem to cut into me, into my soul.

A dark figure seems to stand out among the eerie blue glow.

“Now I see why Grace didn’t want to see this.” I murmur.

“Darin, Darin, Darin. You should know by now your fate is set in stone.” The figure says.

With every word, I take a step back, closer to freedom.

“Hayden! You screwing son of a Glader!” I scream at him.

“Ironic, seeing as I made them, as I made this, all of this!”

He heaves a sigh and points his finger like a death call.

“But I didn’t make you. So I’ll give you a choice. Darin, I just hope you choose the right one.”

My foot hits the edge, and out of the corner of my eye I can see that the rift is closing and fast.

Hayden, my once friend turned enemy finally shows his face. He’s different. The humour he once had is gone. And only scars and bruises remain.

“Surrender, and I’ll let your friends live. Or jump into that rift and make me chase you, hunt you.”

I take one step backwards.

For the first time in my life I know what to say.

“Go stick your head in a hole.”

And I fall into the rift, the second it engulfs me, and sharp snap bursts out as the right finally fixes its wrong.

And all the way down. I can hear him screaming and I know he won’t stop. But I’m ready.
