POEM STARTER
Submitted by Susan Santizo
Write a poem about a place which makes you feel nostalgic.
You can write in any style or genre, but keep this as the central theme.
Up At The Farm
Up in the good hollowed hills
Where the sun bleaches the high grass yellow
And the wind is sweet with honeysuckle
Lives a place where my memory lingers
Cats spread out on windowsills
Nighttime bonfires melting my marshmallows
And the cinders at my feet fall and buckle
From the dew drops, fresh and new like my fingers
The smell of tilled soil and ash
A gentle babbling brook, gossiping all night long
The day full of fresh air, fishing, frogs and flowers
On the old wooden porch, together, chairs rocking
Under the sprinkler, we’d dash
Cooling down with watermelon ice and a song
Summer days without care, dream wishing for hours
Dusk on the pond, dragonflies, bon weather, birds flocking
There, up at the farm
Nothing could harm me
Up at the farm is where
My memories charm me
I was happy there
If just for a time
We forgot to care
The reason or rhyme
Everything that ever mattered
Is now a memory that’s scattered
Up at the farm
Before our lives were shattered
Up at the farm, up where
We are still innocent
Jubilant children there
No adulting imminent
Up, up to the farm we’ll go
Where we are happy again
Row, row, rowing we’ll go
Those fish are biting again
Let’s meet up at the farm again
Once more
Before
We have to leave
For
Good
