WRITING OBSTACLE

Write a gossip session between two friends which suddenly turns very serious.

How can you use dialogue and speech tags to convey the change of tone?

Kiss, Marry…

“What? You got engaged to Dan… But you kissed Greg last night?” I almost drop my sandwich in shock.

Milly nods happily. She keeps stroking the ring and watching it sparkle slightly in the light. “Yeah, it was so sudden, but I did the other one too, just this morning.”

“Other one? You kissed someone else?” I frown. Sure the engagement was a long time coming but I never expected my best friend to cheat.

“No, silly, remember what we talked about yesterday?” She smiles, nibbling at her own sandwich.

I try to cast my mind back to yesterday’s lunch break when we both had tacos from across the street. It took me back to school memories and I bought up a game I used to play.

“Kiss, marry, murder? It’s just something you do in your head, not in real life!” I laugh. “We used to do it with celebrities all the time! I just bought up my boss because he’s cute! What was yours again?”

I relax as I open up my bottle of water. It’s just a joke, maybe she used it to rush the engagement with Dan and lied about Greg to worry me…

Milly looks worried. Her sandwich is put down gingerly. “Hey, you’d help me if I did something bad, right?”

“Yeah, I’m sure Greg was only a joke kiss - Dan might understand that.”

Milly nods to herself and bites a nail.

“I may have murdered my neighbour this morning…” she mumbles softly.

Water goes down the wrong way and luckily there is no-one in the break room to see me choke.

“WHAT?!”
