The Boat
As Stacey waited in line to enter the boat, she noticed how many people were in line ahead of her. She knew this would take a long time, so she woke up early to get a large cup of coffee before coming and still managed to arrive an hour early. She relaxed and set her heavy orange bag down at her feet. She hated orange, but as she only found out about this trip last week, she didn’t have many options for bag colors, since this was the only bag big enough she could find in a short period. This was after all a boat trip across the globe. Stacey liked planning, she liked being in control of things, but her mother being deadly sick wasn’t something she could control. She had sent letters to the best doctors ahead of time and had people coming from far to treat her mother. She took a deep breath and closed her eyes, trying not to stress about the fact that her mother lived in a small village very far away from everything, and as sick as she was, something could happen any moment. She clenched her hands into fists and took a step forward in line, She had to think positively, she would be home in a few days and her mother would be treated. Nothing would happen. Two weeks passed and as she stepped off the boat, the first thing she noticed was her sister in a corner glaring so sharply and intensely at her. As soon as Stacey got off the boat, she ran to her, feeling so relieved to see her in years. As soon as she got close, she was slapped, hard, in the face. Stacey lost balance and fell, confusion and hurt overwhelming her, She murmured under her breath “What-“ her sister looked so intense and angry as she interrupted “Why are you here?” Stacey slowly raised herself and said, “Mom is sick, I traveled 2 weeks to see her.” Her sister looked so shocked and became pale but then her face transformed to pure anger moments later and she said with her body very still “Mother died 2 months ago. You were never here. It was all in the letter I sent you.” Stacey physically couldn’t breathe when she asked “What letter?…”
