POEM STARTER
Submitted by Margaret Sok
Rotting flowers can still smell sweet…
Write a poem which centres on this theme.
Time
The seed planted in darkness. It just wait and be patient
The water will pour onto it
The sun will heat the ground it is in
It will tremble and break little tendrils out of its shell
Reaching, reaching, reaching where?
Is there a place for it to go
The earth adds more water more light encouraging it even though it cannot see
It pushes up through, through what?
Resistance
Pain
Frustration
Not knowing where it’s going
Finally it reaches light
But it’s not done yet
It still must become strong
To stand tall against the wind and rain
To thicken its roots and reach for the sun and the stars and the moon
Then finally it bursts forth a beauty
Something the world can finally see and appreciate
To be loved as is
It might be seen. It might be enshrined. It might exist only for the birds and wild things to see
It exists on its own beauty
It might be picked it might be eaten
But a flower that has fully grown fully reached its fulfilled life
Will inevitably also start to dwindle
The petals will pail
The stalk will weaken.
It’s time to shine will come to an end
But that does not detract from the beauty it gave the life and hope it breathed into the earth
Even as it rots and goes back into the earth.
Just a memory of what it was.
Rotting though it does. It still smells sweet
