why is everything red

and reeks of iron

why do the stars just watch

and never fall

why doesn’t the forest sing

why does the wind hold its breath

why do the trees look

like they’re listening

why is the soil warm

why does it whisper my name

why do I wake choking

and why,

every time I open my eyes

am I closer
