A Volcano That Remains Dormant

“Blake, honey come downstairs” His mom yelled up the steps. Blake was upstairs in his room listening to alternative rock while working out, he was on his last set when his dad came in his room with an extension cord in hand. Blake quickly took off his headphones and set the weight down carefully, “Didn’t you hear your mother calling you?” His dad said with barely contained rage. “What? No…” He said confused as he picked up his phone to change to the next song.

His dad quickly grabbed his phone and smashed it, grabbing Blake by the arm as he raised his hand. Blake pushed his dad away him and made distance between them. His mom came rushing upstairs, “What is going on!?” She said looking between Blake and her husband. “Nothing, Eileen…” He said waving her away, “Just having a talk with my son that’s all” Eileen crossed her arms, “But Robert, we have to talk to him about-“ “I know we have to talk to him about it!” Robert snapped, he then ran a frustrated hand through his hair.

“I’m just trying to teach him a lesson since he wants to be a man now…” Robert said menacingly as he wrapped the cord around his hand once more. Eileen shook her head and closed the door behind her, “I can’t listen to music and work out?” Blake said irritated, “I thought I told you to stop listening to that crap, it rots your brain into doing…stuff like this!” He said now fuming. Blake took a deep breath as he went into his closet to pick out a shirt to wear. “I work out because it’s fun and keeps my mind off of things” Blake said calmly

“Keep your mind off what!?” Robert said yelling, “You don’t pay no bills for nothing!, you don’t have a job!, all you do is sit up in this room all day, door closed doing who knows what!” Robert said as he breathed heavily, “It’s that computer isn’t it?” Blake gave up finding a shirt as he reached for his computer, his dad grabbed onto it as Blake and him fought for it. With one swing he hit hit Blake with the extension cord across his face, causing Blake to let go of his computer. His dad then dropped his computer and began stomping on it.

Blake looked in the mirror silently as little droplets of blood began to form on his welt. His dad then laughed as he watched Blake touch his face, “Yeah, that’ll teach you…” He said panting. Blake’s eyes glowed a soft red as he watched his mark fade away as if it was never there. Blake then grabbed a random shirt and brushed past his dad as he went downstairs. “The hell you think your going!?” His dad yelled after him, “Blake we need to talk to-“ Eileen said to him gently, Blake grabbed his keys and slammed the door to the house, his dad then opened the door after him and yelled, “Go ahead and run away like you always do and don’t come back to this house either!”

Blake’s car tore out of the driveway and sped off down the street.

He ended up stopping at a lake hidden in the forest. He sighed deeply as he started to strip down to his underwear and waded to the middle of the lake. He then sank to the bottom, and laid on the floor of the lake as he watched fish and other sea creatures swim above and around him. With a burst of light, he burned bright, flames and black smoke engulfed him and poisoned the water as he screamed out his unspoken pain. He stayed like that for almost an hour, the flames and smoke slowly died down as he released his emotions.

He resurfaced and looked around the lake, he made a unamused face as he saw fish belly up and crawfish steaming. With a content hum, he grabbed as many as his arms could carry and grabbed his clothes on the way back to his car. He then threw the boiled seafood in the back seat and pulled his clothes over him, he then made a phone call to one of his friends. “Hey Michael, I-…No I didn’t do anything this time…Yes I got kicked out and yeah I do need another pair of underwear, anyway how do you feel about eating seafood for dinner?”. He pulled the car out of the hidden driveway and drove down the forest path not noticing something was watching him from the shadows.
