We met on holiday and it was like magic, we just clicked and were friends within hours, a group of kids having a laugh and enjoying our freedom from school. There were about seven of us and I really fancied Josh the self appointed leader of our group. He was the cool one, the one all the girls liked.

Each day we met up for swimming or messing on the beach, ice creams and laughter.

Then one day as we headed down into the town Josh showed us some fireworks in his bag and explained what a laugh it would be to put a lit firework through a letter box. Cold gripped my heart.

Did he mean it?

Could he be that stupid?

That irresponsible?

I don’t know but what I did know is that I couldn’t let it happen. So I became the grown up, the one who said ‘No, it’s dangerous and stupid and we’re not doing it.’

They looked at me differently, I wasn’t one of the group anymore. I wasn’t cool anymore I was boring. The next day they went on a trip to the cinema and I stayed back with only a book for company.
