Understanding Each Other
Jameson runs his hands through his hair, the strands being pulled. _What is up with him?_

“What? What’s wrong with you?” I ask him. He shakes his head and breathes out. “Could you tell me anything god,” I mutter.
He shakes his head, hurt filtering into his eyes. “You don’t understand,” he tells me. He turns away from me and I scoff.
“I don’t understand? Are you serious? If you could tell me, I would probably understand. You are being an asshole.”
“That night… It changed things, Geneva. I can’t just pretend it didn’t matter.”
I roll my eyes, sick of him acting like he’s the hurt one. It should be me hurt right now. “No. You know what?” I ask. “I’m the one that should be hurt right now. I am, actually. I’m furious.”
He turns back around and it’s then Jameson’s turn to roll his eyes.
I continue speaking, ignoring him. “My mom just died. Her ship sunk in the middle of the sea, and I didn’t even get to properly say goodbye. Sorry you didn’t get the damn validation you craved after we kissed once.”
Jameson walks closer to me and wipes the single tear off of my cheek. “I’m sorry,” he whispers.
I lift my eyes to him, searching his expression. Looking for something, anything.
“I know you’re dealing with a lot,” he starts, “but I couldn’t handle seeing you after everything got left the way it did. Please understand this is terrifying for me.”
Anger burns through me and I push him back. “No, I don’t understand. You’re comparing your crisis to my mom _dying, _Jameson. _Dying. _Don’t you dare sit there and act like we relate at all.”
Jameson tugs on his hair, his jaw clenching. “God, you honestly know nothing, do you?” His head bows down and I can’t help but wonder what’s about to happen. When his eyes finally lift up, tears shine in them. “I love you,” he whispers.
I gasp and take a step back. Jameson only nods. “I’m sorry, Gen. It’s true. I’ve loved you for years and that night… It broke something in me. Something that needed to be broken a long time ago. I’m sorry, this timing is horrible. I just couldn’t hold this in any longer.”
I don’t say a word. I barely breathe. This is all too much, and I can’t handle it. I take a step his way. Two. Three. Until I am finally right in front of him.
“Kiss me,” I breathe out. And he does.
Jameson buries my lips with his and I can’t stop the tears streaming down my face. He pulls away and searches my face.
Without words, Jameson grabs me in his arms and carries me to his room.
_There are no secrets between us now, _I think to myself as we lay on his bed, his arms around me.
All I feel is his heartbeat and hear the gentle breathing from us before I drift off to sleep.
