The Dedriwinkle Chronicles Book 10: Broken
“Where have you been?” Exclaimed Alea as she ran from their dorm to hug me.
Leo explained everything, and Kai had a look of pure rage on his face. “He didn’t hurt you, did he?” He said turning to me defensively, his fists clenched.
I was taken aback. “N-no,” I responded. Kai nodded firmly and stomped back into the dorm.
Alea and Leo must’ve noticed the confused look on my face.
“He seems like he hates everyone at first, trust me. He tried to kill-“ “I know, Leo told me,” I said cutting her off.
“I’m tired. If you guys don’t mind, I’m going to bed.” I walked past Alea quickly.
Leo called after me, but Alea shushed him quickly.
I needed some time alone.
Someone shook me awake. It was still dark outside, and I could hardly see.
Leo knelt next to the couch and held a finger to his mouth.
He took my hand and led me to the back of Alea’s bed. We slipped through the crack between her bed and Kai’s, where Alea and Kai were tucked in a small crack.
Leo let me go first and sat close next to me. “What’s happening?” I whispered, trying to adjust to a comfortable position.
“Look,” Leo said, pointing through a small gap between the beds.
There was a warm light near their dorm, and black figures approached.
They smashed the window on the door and unlocked it from the inside.
My heart began to race. Leo squeezed my hand and whispered something to me, but I was too terrified to hear.
Whoever was in our room began walking around. I heard things crashing and breaking and loud thuds from falling objects.
I jumped every time and clung to Leo’s arm. Alea looped her arm through mine and tried to calm me.
I felt stupid. No one else was scared.
After what felt like hours, the people finally left. We waited a few more minutes before Leo went to make sure.
After about half an hour, when Alea and I were ready to go search for him, he poked his head around the corner.
“All clear.” Kai and Alea walked out first, and I followed.
I gasped as I stepped on a sharp blade of glass, but that wasn’t even the worst of it.
Alea’s drawings had been shredded into pieces. Kai’s books were ripped up. Leo sat silently in the corner across from his bed, his hands in his hair.
I walked to his side and put my arm around his shoulder.
Leo’s bed had been ripped to shreds. His guitar was smashed. He had nothing, so why…?
My question answered itself. A broken picture of Leo and a woman lay on the floor. Her face had been blacked out.
I slowly picked it up and turned back to Leo.
He just buried his head in his knees.
Alea sat on the floor next to him. Kai just stood silently.
I stepped forward and screamed as I remembered the broken glass stuck in my foot.
Kai ran next to me and examined my foot. “It’s not too deep, I can still pull it out,” he said to Alea.
She nodded and ran to her couch. She shoved it aside and rolled up the rug, revealing a loose floorboard.
She pulled a first aid kit and a small backpack from it, then pushed it back down, covered it, and pulled the couch back over it.
Kai prepared the bandage and a weird white cream while I began to shake.
The pain was unbearable. “Someone needs to hold her up,” Kai said.
“I will,” Leo volunteered. He sat next to me and put his arm around my waist. “Don’t scream, just squeeze my hand,” he said slipping his hand into mine.
Now I was nervous for a different reason. Alea held my leg down and I squeezed my eyes shut.
I felt a sharp, stabbing pain in my foot. I squeezed Leo’s hand as hard as I possibly could, but it did nothing.
He held me tighter, but it made no difference. I blacked out.
