COMPETITION PROMPT

A forensic agent is forced to go on the run because of what they uncovered on their last case.

The Cost of Truth: A Moral Tug of War

(Btw I would really appreciate if you guys read through this: Its my first competition I've entered)

The blood on the knife matched one person I never expected: My own flesh and blood. I always thought monsters live outside my home - until I found my brother's DNA on the murder weapon. Someone truly innocent was in jail instead of my brother who is the murderer, the criminal, the monster I never thought he'd turn out to be.

My heart raced as I struggled with a moral dillema regarding my family. If I report this case, will I have betrayed my brother? If I don't, have I betrayed my mentors and employers who have trusted me to report any case with honesty? Flames of anxiety spread through my limbs as his shelter brain is struggling. My disquieted heart oscillated between two epochs, my brother's life and the innocent person who was trapped in jail because of me. My fingers were hesitant, I had tremulous faltering hands as I tucked the DNA reports slowly into my bag, still shocked by the results. Trepidation lingered to my limbs, my whole body was shaking as I walked outside of the room where the crime-scene occured. My anguish mind was suffocating with unspoken admonitions, I dare not speak. Each breath is an inexorable reminder of the displacement. This was an insurmountable challenge for me, this portentous decision between family and work is extemely difficult.

'DROP' (the evidence dropped from my unzipped bag to the cold pavement)

'As my selfish colleague picked it up curiously, I continued unknowingly walking, not knowing that today was the day where both my job or family life was about to come to an end'

Ring, ring, ring! I picked up my phone, it was the CHIEF FORENSIC OFFICER. People with special suits started to surround me. It was time to RUN! It was time to run away from betrayal! My mentor, who had trusted me for years and praised me for my excellence will now see me as an embarrassment, a disgrace to the company. I didn't have time to check if the evidence was leaked or even fell out of my bag, officers wre chasing me from behind! Two pictures formed in my head: My brother, once renowned in this city, now sitting in jail, his job ruined, his reputation ruined, his whole life would be ruined FOREVER. But also, the innocent person is sitting in jail because of me! I am about to break two people's lives into a million pieces. By heart skipped a beat, still panting from all that running, lost in that thought. Why do I have to be stuck between two things that are very important to me? Moral right and wrong and my brother. I turned around, the officers have lost me. I needed to find a way to escape. FAST!

In front of me, was the airport! I quickly ran inside, waves of mechanical scents bombarded my face. I booked a ticket to Australia, the other side of the world. No one will be able to track or detect me there. Once I boarded the plane, a sigh of relief blankleted my face. As I looked at the window, the plane hovered into the sky, disappearing into the realm of clouds. Bye bye betrayal, bye bye home, bye bye treasured job. Tears rolled down my eyes - everything is over.

As I turned on the mini screen, the news had my face on it. It was running through everyone's screens. Everyone turned back and looked at me, with my distinct porcelain scarf and top hat. I'm on the plane right now and am writing this journal to those who were curious about my wherabouts. I will be arrested after this flight journey ends. In this adventure I learnt one invaluable lesson: Honesty is always the best policy in all cases, it is the policy that will protect you and the policy that will gain trust from other people.
