WRITING OBSTACLE
Write about a place only by describing what is not there.
Usually it is important to note the things that are present in an environment – so try focusing on the abscences to see if we can envisage your setting.
The Presence Of Absence
This place may not have the view of an ocean, there’s no tourist attractions, or even the chatter of a crowd. It doesn’t have wheels to carry me from one place to another. There aren’t any speakers blaring so loud that you can feel the beat coursing through your body. No, it doesn’t have fancy medical equipment. In most people’s eyes it doesn’t have what it could or even what it should.
But you know what else it doesn’t have? It doesn’t have a ticket machine running nonstop. It doesn’t have people constantly yelling at me. It doesn’t have cement walls with iron bars and a tall fence. And most days it doesn’t even have stress.
It lacks many things, but is that really a bad thing? Perhaps the most important part is that it doesn’t have a reason for me to leave. I wish I could make you understand but I can’t because to top it off, it doesn’t have you.
