POEM STARTER
Write a tripadi poem about birds.
A tripadi is a form of Bengali poetry that consists of multiple three-line stanzas, where the first and second lines of each stanza rhyme.
Wings
The Robin is the early bird
It’s song among the first that’s heard
Famous for its steady fast till dawn
The Cardinal, colored of my heart
Its crimson catches my eye by start
Springing wild from limb to lawn
The Blue Jay is a crowd pleaser
Smart as the sky but also a teaser
Diving, flitting, fast as an acrobat
The Mockingbird copies and plays
Defends its nest from sparrows and jays
Its eloquent mimicry belies the alley cat
Chickadees share a friendly song
So uplifting you want to sing along
Tufted down warms the winter night
The Dove’s soft, sweet cooings
Reminds us of more peaceful doings
It lulls us to forgive the war we fight
Finches, bright yellow, black and white
Cinches me to do what’s right
For who can argue with such a creature?
The Woodpecker knocking at my door
Taps and taps; then taps forever more
I cannot answer now, my holy preacher!
A Titmouse with her cheerful crest
Small and gray, she bears her breast
Flying free as Spring at a hundred paces
The Sparrow sings a song full-breasted
Carried on the air with care invested
Bringing pride and joy to all our faces
The Hummingbird buzzes to each flower
Drinking down their nectar for its power
Never has a heart or wing beaten so fast
The Wren, so delicate and sleek
Defies the wind from tail to beak
Becomes our winged friend saved best for last.
