long drive black sky no stars i am desperate for a gas station. i meant to find the place where all good things begin but the road keeps going and all the flowers died ten miles back. the odometer keeps ticking up by increments of fifty as if to reassure me that i’m going somewhere but the horizon never changes. the sun hasn’t risen for what feels like days and the headlights broke or fell out or just plain stopped working. there are no rocks in the road and the car won’t turn but i have to keep my foot on the gas or something will happen. the brake snapped when i tried it the first time and it still sits crumpled in the footwell. the radio doesn’t sing to me anymore but i still hear words in the garbled static it spits out. i have a heavy weight in my gut that feels like it’s gonna split me open and spill my entrails all over the cracked leather seats. the air is heavy with rain but there are no clouds in the sky and no wind besides the world rushing around me. there is no comfort in the hum of the engine, a buzz that settles itself into the back of my neck telling me to go forward go forward don’t ever stop don’t ever take your foot off the gas just keep going and i might be running from something but i forgot what it is. i recite bible verses to myself like it’ll help me but mostly i just want the fuel indicator to stay on full. i keep my eyes on the long white lines; i laugh like hell.
