POEM STARTER
Write a poem based on a classic children's story.
You don't have to recount the story, but try to draw ideas or themes from it. It doesn't have to be based on a fairytale; it could be a Disney story, a myth, or even a traditional family tale.
Jack And The Red Giant Star
Once upon a time, in the kingdom of the giants
Lived a young boy who on stealing was reliant
He stole for his mother, he stole for his cow
He stole for the fun of it and he’d tell you just how.
You see, the Giants lived high up in the sky divine
So the boy, Jack, learned how to climb there by vine
A bean stalk so grand, so tall, and so strong
No mortal man could fell it, or any mortal throng.
Only a giant harp song could sway it or bring it down;
Magical vibrations were all that could turn it brown.
Jack and his mother once were poor, destitute in fact
Naught to eat, but magical beans, all else they lacked
Jack climbed his beanstalk to take the Giants gold
To save his mother from ruin, his actions were bold.
He met a lady giant, she fed him wine and bread
Full and fat but needing more, he followed her to bed.
The days that passed were full of pleasure
Jack had neither known love, nor seen such treasure
For the Giant’s husband was a miner of golden ore
It was his bright riches each glimmering sunset wore. The Lady giant said her husband was in the mounts
Digging deep for months for every golden ounce
But soon he would return so Jack would have to go
Desperately, he ran away, her golden goose in tow.
Down the stalk, Jack so quickly descended
The goose’s eggs dropped, too, golden and spendid
Jack’s mother ducked as the eggs fell on her head
“Careful, son! Do you wish to kill your mother, dead?”
Jack and his mother sold the eggs, bought a new cow and thatch, by then the goose ran away so Jack’s mother begged him to climb the stalk again to steal another golden batch…
Jack was worried the Giants wife would be upset with him, so he decided to bring a trusted, old friend.
His accomplice, Jill, who lived up the hill, said she was glad to be his company, she’d see him to the end.
So Jack and Jill climbed up the stalk to fetch another goose. But when they arrived, the giant lady he deprived shrieked and let her temper loose!
Jill hit under a golden throne, her sack she filled with riches; Jack dove into a golden moat that filled his tiny britches.
“Where are thee, Jack? You stole my heart and then you took my fowl! I can’t forgive a boy who steals!” Then she let out a howl!
The lady giant fell to her knees and they began to sob
Jack and Jill were moved, but had to finish their job.
Jack grabbed a singing harp; Jill dragged her heavy sack… they ran toward the stalk only to find it was gone! The lady giant had pulled it up by its roots when she found what Jack had done!
Jack and Jill scrambled, for now there was no escape
Into the clouds, they ambled, to the place where the stars shine agape!
There, a red giant star shined like a thousand suns,
“Whither thee off so hurriedly, my tiny mortal ones?”
“we wish to escape an angry giant - who stole us from our bed!” Jack could steal, but also lie, with little qualm for what he said.
Hoping the red giant star would pity the boy and girl, he played the victim preciously, but the the star saw through his pearl.
“Come and hide inside my core, it’s ever warm and kind. Bring your riches - rest your worries. It’s safe and free inside, you’ll find.”
Jack climbed up on the red Giant’s face and peered down its fiery fiery maw. Jill joined him and looked surprised - it was the biggest mouth she ever saw!
They had no choice, the lady giant was drawing near. Her bellowing and screaming with all they could hear.
So Jack jumped down and then Jill after, their feet were soon on fire! The red giant star closed his mouth - there the boy and girl, screaming in pain, would soon expire.
The lady giant climbed up the clouds and reach the edge of the sky, she called out to her husband to comfort her and let out a regretful sigh.
“All is well, my dear, the thieves are dead and gone.”
The red giant bowed and kissed his wife - for them the day was won.
