STORY STARTER

Write a scene where a character confesses their (unreturned) love for another.

I Love You and I Hate It

“Because I love you!” She said, frustrated. I blinked, that was not at all what I thought she’d say. She looked out the window, her face flushed and angry. I just stared in shock still trying to process what she had just said. “That’s why, ok? That’s why I was watching you. I’m not trying to murder you, or whatever you thought I was doing.” It was my turn to flush uncomfortably, remembering the way I had dragged her into this room and started interrogating her. I was such an idiot. Of course she wasn’t the one who had left those messages. Not messages; death threats. Nicki wouldn’t do that. I hesitated, wanting to address her confession, but I honestly had no idea what to say. “Since when?” I asked, because that was my biggest question. “Since the first time I looked you in those big green eyes,” she said, almost spitting the words out. “But I know you love Sophia. She’s beautiful, and you guys are perfect together. I always knew I never had a chance.” She said, angry at herself. I felt terrible, she was right. I never had and never would think of her that way. “But I couldn’t get you out of my head, and my eyes always drift your way no matter how much I would rather be blind.” I blinked again, not sure how to feel. The words themselves were kind of sweet, but the tone made me glad she wasn’t mad at me. “I love you with all my heart, and I hate it with all my mind.” And with that she stormed past me, the inner turmoil so intense I could feel the force as she brushed past me.
