POEM STARTER

Write a poem about choosing between following your heart or following your head.

Follow The Leader

The mind — incisive, critical, analytical

Can seem so forbidding, so curt, so cynical

Compared to the emotions, ever so whimsical

Like contrasting a book of history with a musical…

The head wants to believe what it can see

What it can reason is what it can safely be

Compared to the heart, that grows like a tree

Reaching out for light and hope, ever reaching to be free…

Who’s really in charge, in this internal tug of war?

The head that is mindful? The heart that wants more?

A divine design saw fit to put the heart under the head —

To remind us one must be the leader, the other must be led.

But are we meant to follow our intellect alone?

Can logic dictate what instinct, intuition makes known?

The heart has reasons of which reason knows not —

So we follow its compelling rhythm, ignoring what we’re taught.
