POEM STARTER
‘Bees offer honey far more readily than they sting.’
Write a poem that begins with this line. What themes can this metaphor reflect?
Sting.
Bees do not go about their life consumed with the thought of when they might sting.
Instead, their days are spent in quest of pollen.
Through the flower fields and old man Wiley’s garden, they collect vital nutrients for their queen and their young.
Their life spent in service, their beauty but a byproduct.
Fluorescent lights shine on rows of honey in grocery stores,
Their fate only to be indulged by humans unaware of the bees’ selflessness.
A one-sided relationship, flip switched to fear the moment they encounter the yellow flyer.
We can only assume the bees are pleased in their natural rhythm.
They know they will be provided for,
And unknowingly create beauty in the mundane of service.
