POEM STARTER

Write a poem about a birthday.

This doesn't have to be about your own birthday. What themes could you explore through writing about birthdays?

The Birthday Alone

It’s my birthday,

And my parents are in Mexico

Having the time of their life

With their work friends.

My brothers

Are with their friends,

Drinking and partying

Not caring to spend time with me.

And my friends

Are being mean

And sending me hateful texts,

Not caring that it’s my special day.

Which leaves me

Feeling alone and gloomy

In my empty bedroom.

But then

My phone dings.

It’s mycouch from China.

“HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!”

She exclaims

I say thanks of course,

But then I tell her

About my friends,

My parents

And my siblings.

She is mad of course,

But she tells me

“Don’t let them ruin your special day.

If there having fun without you,

Then have fun without them.”

So I do.

I walk to my favorite ice cream shop

And order five scoops

Of cookie dough ice cream.

The walk was 40 minutes long,

But I didn’t care.

I gobble up all five scoops

While jamming to my favorite songs.

Then,

I grab the snacks in my house that

My mom says are only for “special occasions“

And eat them all up

While playing my favorite movie.

Because

I don’t deserve to be

Sad,

Gloomy

Or angry.

I deserve to be loved.
